In the chronicles of my recollection, Art Miami 2023 shall forever stand as a luminous testament to the boundless well of human creativity. Through the medium of this missive, I ardently hope to impart but a fractional measure of the enchantment that this peerless exposition bestowed upon my senses.

The exhibition featured works by Ukrainian artists and sculptors that were noticed not only by visitors and collectors, but also by the organisers themselves. Earlier, we wrote about the contemporary artist of Ukrainian origin Dasha Kandinsky, Lana Kaufman with her presentation "War Through the Blossoms", the debut of Victoria Yakusha with her collection "Land of Light", and Lina Condes.

Lina Condes.

Takafumi Asakura  "A Transcendental Divinity Water", 2023

Art Miami 2023, a veritable cornucopia of artistic splendor, played host to an array of luminaries, each unveiling a treasure trove of creativity that left an indelible mark upon the canvas of my appreciation. To wit, I encountered works that ingeniously reimagined the masterpieces of antiquity and contemporaneity alike, employing audacious strokes and unconventional materials that birthed a visual symphony of admiration and introspection.

The journey through this extraordinary assembly of artistic opulence was akin to traversing an ethereal plane, where the very air resonated with the echoes of creative genius. The exhibition, in its entirety, became a wellspring of inspiration, an oasis of aesthetic fervor that transcended the ordinary and beckoned the observer to partake in the grandeur that unfolded before them.

    Nick Gentry's 'Populous'

In a captivating blend of innovation and nostalgia, Nick Gentry's masterpiece, "Populous," takes center stage at the Robert Fontaine Gallery in Art Miami 2023. This mixed-media marvel, measuring 37 x 28 inches, is a sensory journey through the intersection of art, technology, and the remnants of a bygone era.

Gentry, a visionary British artist from London, redefines artistic collaboration with his unique approach. "Populous" is a testament to his philosophy, where contributor, artist, and viewer converge in a dance of shared experience.

The canvas, adorned with used computer disks and oil paint on wood, becomes a tactile exploration of the artist's commitment to recycling and repurposing.

As a maestro of obsolete media, Gentry's floppy disk paintings are iconic, offering a commentary on consumerism, technology, and cyberculture. His emphasis on the recycling and reuse of personal objects becomes a central theme, inviting viewers to contemplate their relationship with the transient nature of our digital past.

"Populous" not only invites us to witness the convergence of art and society but encourages active participation in the ongoing dialogue. Gentry's creation transcends the canvas, becoming a bridge between the past and present, where the discarded relics of technology find new life in a vibrant tapestry of artistic brilliance.

In the heart of Art Miami 2023, "Populous" stands as an ephemeral echo—a reminder of the ever-changing landscape of our digital age. It is more than a painting; it is a narrative, a conversation, and an immersive experience crafted by the hands of a true innovator.

    Marc Quinn 'Raw Earth'  2023

In a nuanced blend of contemporary artistry, Marc Quinn's 'Raw Earth' steals the spotlight at Art Miami 2023. This limited edition screen print with silver leaf, priced at $7,900, is a visual voyage into the intricacies of perception and identity.

Measuring 43 x 43 inches, 'Raw Earth' magnifies the iris, traditionally seen as a mirror of the soul, into an abstract celebration of individuality. Quinn's photorealist approach transforms the eye into a visual index, inviting viewers to explore the ambiguity at the heart of our existence.

Beyond aesthetics, Quinn's fascination lies in creating 'stealth' portraits—universal yet uniquely individual. The print, signed and numbered, becomes a profound expression of interconnectedness in our media-driven world. The works 'Map of Where You Can't See the Stars' and 'Eye of History' intertwine the eye with a world map, reflecting our evolving reality.

As 'Raw Earth' graces Art Miami 2023, it's more than an artwork; it's an invitation to delve into the depths of identity through Quinn's masterful lens.

    "Beyond Description," BEOMSU KIM, Korea

In the captivating canvas intertwines histories and dreams through stationary elegance. Through the artist's re-editing alchemy, memories become a door to a new emotional space, where the sacred and secular beautifully converge. The film's soft, colorful light harmonizes with the canvas, creating an exquisite dance of splendor in the darkness. This artwork is a breath of life into collected stories, a fusion that expands the very structure of space, offering viewers a sublime intersection of the secular and the pious.

Mario Soria, "Another Sunny Day", 2023, Spain

Mixing American pop art with European traditions, Soria's oil on canvas, adorned with wood and toys, creates a surreal interstellar pop masterpiece. The main character, poised in minimal action, becomes a focal point against a backdrop of figures and objects, weaving a captivating narrative. Soria's art, a harmonious blend of styles, is a three-dimensional experience where frames and canvas sculptures envelop the painting, bringing it to life.

    "After Jean-Michel Basquiat", Cabeza

Immerse yourself in the essence of Jean-Michel Basquiat's genius with "Cabeza." Born from the hands of an artistic heir, this screenprint on Saunders Hot Press watercolour paper pays homage to Basquiat's iconic legacy.  Authenticated by Gerard Basquiat, the executor of the estate, this piece is a numbered gem from the edition of 85, capturing the vitality and innovation of Basquiat's groundbreaking vision.

Mel Ramos (1935–2018), an American Pop artist, presents "Candy #1," a provocative lightbox masterpiece integrating idealized nude women with popular culture imagery. Ramos, known for his humorous and controversial style, draws inspiration from mass media, consumer products, and celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Scarlett Johansson. Despite his apolitical stance, his work, rooted in Surrealism, often features absurd conjunctions, such as nude figures emerging from candy wrappers. Collected by major museums globally, Ramos's impact extends to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Centre Pompidou, and more. "Candy #1" encapsulates Ramos's blend of sensuality, glossy flatness, and surreal juxtapositions, provoking discussions in the realm of Pop art.

Meet Manolo Valdés, the renowned Spanish artist

The extraordinary works of art, unfurled before my discerning gaze, evoked a profound sense of awe and wonder. Each stroke of the artist's brush, every contour of the sculptures, manifested as a veritable masterpiece, capturing the essence of creative brilliance and technical mastery. Manolo Valdés, a luminary amongst sculptors, distinguished himself with a collection of sculptures that exuded a magnificence akin to the finest tapestries of artistic virtuosity

Sculptures have been captivating art enthusiasts and collectors worldwide. With his unique approach to drawing inspiration from art history, Valdés has created a signature style that showcases pared-down forms and unrefined mark-making. His sculptures, which have fetched prices upwards of half a million pounds sterling, have been showcased at prestigious art events like Art Miami 2023, where they were presented by Opera Gallery.
Born on March 8, 1942, in Valencia, Spain, Valdés attended the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts before embarking on his artistic career. In 1964, he co-founded the group Equipo Crónica, a movement influenced by Pop Art, with the aim of creating politically charged works. Valdés and his collaborator Rafael Solbes continued their partnership until Solbes' untimely death in 1981. Throughout his career, Valdés has exhibited his works in various renowned galleries and museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Guggenheim Bilbao, and the de Young Museum in San Francisco.
Valdés's artistic style is characterized by his ability to explore history while still giving his unique touch to the original subject matter. He reimagines famous works of art by old masters and 20th-century icons, incorporating unusual materials and applying paint in a rough manner. His paintings and sculptures often feature inflated figures, minimal details, and abstracted forms, resulting in visually striking and thought-provoking pieces.
One of Valdés's notable series is "Las Meninas," a contemporary interpretation of Velázquez's famous painting. Guided by his search for volume and three-dimensional images, Valdés created monumental sculptures of "La Meninas" that have been displayed in Madrid, Munich, Bilbao, Biarritz, and Monaco. These sculptures pay tribute to Velázquez while also showcasing Valdés's avant-garde approach to art.

Valdés's work has been widely recognized, with numerous exhibitions held in galleries and museums worldwide. In 1999, he was nominated to represent Spain at the 48th Venice Biennale, and in 2002, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao organized a major retrospective of his work, which garnered tremendous public acclaim.
In addition to his artistic achievements, Valdés was honored as an officer of the Order of Cultural Merit of the Principality of Monaco in 2005, further cementing his status as a highly esteemed artist. Currently, he resides and works between New York, NY, and Madrid, Spain, continuing to push boundaries and inspire art lovers with his innovative creations.
Manolo Valdés's artwork has not only garnered critical acclaim but has also achieved remarkable prices at auctions. In October 2006, his sculpture "Reina Mariana" sold for an impressive EUR 325,600.00 at Christie's in Madrid, surpassing the estimated value. Notably, one of Valdés's works, "Infanta Margarita," achieved the highest hammer price of GBP 457,250.00 (€538,602.24) at an auction in February 2011.
With his captivating and distinctive artistic style, Manolo Valdés continues to leave a lasting impression on the art world, captivating both seasoned collectors and new enthusiasts alike. His sculptures, with their unique blend of history, innovation, and artistic mastery, are truly a testament to his creative genius.
